Walking!

Charlotte is trying to walk all over the place now! She takes about 4 or 5 steps and then falls down but is so proud of herself. She will turn 1 next week so it really is amazing to think back on how much she has grown and changed this year. She also got her 7th tooth in - on the top right. We will be at the beach next week when we celebrate her birthday so we are looking forward to that!

David's 31st Birthday

David turned 31 on May 11th so we celebrated by having some friends over. Also, David's brother, Russell, came up to surprise him! We really enjoyed having him here, even for just a day. The best part of the night was Charlotte taking her first steps! David had her standing up and offered her a tortilla chip and she took 2 steps to try to get the chip he was holding. We all cheered for her and she was very pleased with herself! I have to admit I got tears in my eyes watching her. Here are some pictures from the night.

6th Tooth

Charlotte now has 6 teeth - 3 on bottom and 3 on top (the new one is on top). She also likes to point at everything and say "ooo ooo!" When music comes on, she claps her hands and sometimes raises her hands and starts moving back and forth to the music. We so enjoy her little personality!

Baking Bread & Granola

Charlotte and I started the day by baking bread and granola. Last fall I kept reading all these blogs of people who bake their own bread and all the benefits of it. So, I used some Christmas money and purchased a bread machine. I am totally sold now on making your own bread! Not only do you get to control the ingredients (I only use honey to sweeten mine and its 100% whole wheat) but it taste so much better than anything store bought. I also started baking granola mainly because David would eat about a box of the store bought stuff a day which gets a little expensive. It is naturally sweetened and you can add anything you want to it. We typically add raisins and maybe sunflower seeds.

Here are some pictures of Charlotte on the move this past month.

Thoughts on Weaning

Well, Charlotte will be 11 months next week so I am beginning to wean her now. I'd like her to be ready to drink milk on her 1st birthday. She is really good at drinking from her sippy cup so hopefully this will be a smooth transition! Since she was about 6 months old I've been nursing her 4 times a day (7, 11, 3, and 7). But, as she's been eating more and more table food she has really lost interest in her midday feedings. We have to be in a private place because she is so easily distracted! So this week I dropped her 3 pm feeding.

We had such a rough time getting started with breastfeeding. The lactation consultant said she was just sucking to shallow?! and that hopefully as she got older she would be able to do this better. The first week home was horrible - she lost way too much weight and cried literally the whole time (I would too if I wasn't getting enough to eat!). So after a trip to the lactation consultant I had to begin pumping to get my milk supply back and get her some food to eat. Ahhh pumping....little did I know that I'd be pumping ALL the time for the next 2 1/2 months!! But, PRAISE GOD we finally got the hang of it! I appreciate being able to offer Charlotte a bottle every now and then but breastfeeding is so much easier! All this to say, I am very thankful for all that the Lord taught me during that very trying time and that we were finally able to breasfeed. Besides the fact that breasfeeding is nutritionally superior, provides all kinds of immunity, and helped me lose the baby weight (yeah!), I have really come to love the special time spent with Charlotte. And I will miss it!

Pictures of Charlotte

Our friend from church Elizabeth Marx came and photographed Charlotte last week. She is a wonderful photographer - her business, Almond Leaf Studios, is helping her fund her way back to being a missionary in India. Check out her blog with pictures of Charlotte:
